About Nana Plaza

Nana Plaza is the largest of Bangkok’s three red-light districts, along with Soi Cowboy and Patpong, catering to foreigners. Sex workers ply their trade mostly in “Go-go bars” of various sizes, some employing hundreds of girls. Go-go bars usually have a stage where girls will dance in attire ranging from evening dresses to only t-back style underwear.
Around Nana Plaza, businesses cater to the thousands of men who visit on a given day, usually travelers from industrialized nations. Bars and restaurants line the street in all directions and numerous hotels, from budget to luxury can be reached in a five minute walk.
Nana Plaza is a three-story shopping center set around a recently covered plaza and hidden off a side street near one of Bangkok’s main arteries, Sukhumvit Road. At the time of this writing, there were between 20 and 30 bars in the plaza, as well as a few open air bars on the first floor.
Most of the bars at Nana Plaza employ girls only, including the largest, Rainbow, Billboard, and Butterflies. Growing in size are the ladyboy-only bars such as Temptations and Charade. The occasional bar will employ both girls and ladyboys (Straps).
Customers are asked to buy drinks for the girls, which the girls receive a commission for, ranging from 25% to 60% of the cost of the drink. The ladies drinks start at 150 Baht, and the girls are expected to entertain the customer while the drink is consumed.
Once a customer finds a girl he likes, he can “barfine” her. This is defined as a fee paid to the bar so she can leave. Prostitution, believe it or not, is illegal in Thailand, and the services offered by the girl are meant to remain separate from the bar, though commonly the bar will collect her fee as well.
For short-time barfine, two hours or less, the total cost is between 2,000 and 4,000 Baht. It depends on the girl and the customer, and is usually set by the girl.
For long-time barfine, all night, prices start at 5,000 Baht.
